The best scenic views of Lake Como sometimes are very easy to reach. But where to go to enjoy the most beautiful view of the lake? One of our favourite scenic views of Lake Como is located not far from the famous village of Varenna, at the end of the Val d’Esino. We are talking about the Vezio Castle, a Romanesque fortress built in the 5th century.
Immersed in the lush vegetation of the lake, the castle stands mighty on a promontory overlooking the lake and settled around a tower, from which you can enjoy one of the best scenic views of Lake Como, of the surrounding mountains and the central part of the lake. From here you can see all the three branches: Como, Lecco and Colico.
The castle also hosts a falconry. The Falcons are trained in the castle’s garden during the afternoon opening hours. While the birds of prey alternate in acrobatic flights over the lake, the falconers share the story of each bird with detailed information on the history of falconry and on the habits of barn owls, owls, buzzards and hawks. To watch these unique shows you can check the schedules on the official website.
How to reach the Vezio Castle
The castle is located on the western shore of Lake Como, in the province of Lecco. The fastest way to reach it is by car from Varenna. Following the signs, until the end of the thoroughfare, you will find a carpark and the entrance to the small village surrounding the fortress. From here you can continue on foot until you reach the Castle. The longest and most suggestive option is the path that from Varenna takes you to the Castle in less than half an hour. The climb, though tiring, offers rewarding scenic views on Lake Como.
